January 16-20

Finals week! Please use your study guide to study! You will need to apply the information you know to answer the questions. It is worth 10% of your final grade.

M-no school

T-essay/study

W-final for 1st and 2nd period

Th-final for 3rd and 4th period

F-final for 5th period

January 9-13

On Monday January 9th I will give you a study guide for the final. You will need to STUDY using the study guide for next week’s finals. We will continue to study cells this week and do a lot of comparisons. What is the difference between a protist, bacteria and a virus? What is the difference between a plant and an animal cell? What is the difference between unicellular and multicellular?

ALL MISSING WORK IS DUE THIS FRIDAY, JANUARY 13!!!!!

January 2-6

Welcome back! There are only 2 weeks until finals so please turn in all missing work. Here are the extra credit opportunities you have but I will only accept extra credit if all your other work is completed.

Myth Busters-watch an appropriate episode of Myth Busters and identify the scientific steps and elements of good experimental design you observe.

Microscope Instruction Manual: The assignment sheet for this is in the blue hanging file in the back of the classroom

2nd disease report: Research a second disease and write a report.

We will be studying cells this week. We will set up a Cells Book and that will be your study guide for this unit. Please don’t lose it!

Assignments: The disease report was due on the Friday before you left for the holiday break. Now the PSA is due. Please have a cartoon or poster advertisement about your disease (how do you prevent it, information about it or what you do now that you have it).

Cell Book: What I think I know about cells. List at least 5 things you think you know about cells.

Cell Book: Disease-there is a copy of my disease notes in the blue hanging file. Copy the notes and write a summary.

Cell Book: Organization-there is a copy of my organization notes in the blue hanging file. Copy the notes and write a summary.

Cell Book: Cell Theory-Use your take home book Ch. 1 Section 1 Read about the cell theory. In your cell book list the 3 parts of the cell theory. I also want you to explain why a virus is not part of the cell theory.

HERO BOX

In order to support our soldiers overseas we are going to be filling and sending HERO BOXES for the next 3 months. The students are welcome to write letters to put in the box also. Here is some information about our hero.

Tommy Lee – He is bases at Camp Marmal in Afghanistan.

His request are personal hygiene, coffee, condiments, candy and snacks.

If you would like more information about the HERO BOX you can visit. http://www.herobox.org/sponsors.asp

Thank you for being generous and sending in items for the HERO BOX.

We will continue with Unit C Disease this week. Please try to get all of your missing work in before winter break. If you want to make up a test or lab come Tuesday after school or make arrangements with me to come in the morning at 8:30 am.

It is spirit week this week…listen to the announcements to find out the fun stuff to wear this week.

Monday: Who Hair Day or Sports Day

Tuesday: Ties and Tutus Day

Wednesday: Ugly Christmas Sweater or T-Shirt Day

Thursday: Pajama Day

Friday: Holiday Hat Day

Disease Report: Research a disease of your choice. If you can’t find your paper to answer the questions you can use the online book. It is explained in Activity #31.

December 5-9

Remember to make up test or labs you need to make arrangements with me for 8:30 am or you can come on Tuesdays after school.

We are beginning our Unit C on disease this week. You were given a disease report to complete. It is due Friday, December 16. The questions for the disease report are in pocket #18 in the classroom. The PSA (public service announcement) is due after the holiday break. You can use the cartoon strip to create a PSA explaining how to prevent getting the disease or you can create a poster.

If you would like extra credit you are welcome to complete a second disease report for 15 points.

You were also given a study guide for the microscope test on Thursday. Please study to earn your license.

Assignments:

Lab book participation: I will be checking your participation for 3 disease lessons – Pellagra, Bubonic Plague and Leprosy. If you have earned a poor grade for this assignment you may complete a second disease report for a higher grade.

Microscope test: To retake this test please make arrangements with me for am or you may come in Tuesdays after school.

November 28-December 2

You will get a study guide for Unit One today. Please study the test will be on Friday. We will be looking at the disease Pellagra and how they used the scientific method to find the cause. Remember to STUDY!

Assignments:

Design an experiment: Pocket #12, This is also listed on the week of Nov. 21-23 as Data Toss Activity #9. If you are at home and do not have the planning sheet just list out the steps of the scientific method and plan your experiment that way.

Unit One notes: Completed or not…no make up. If you did not finish taking notes in class I gave you a set of my notes to use to copy. If you don’t have them turned in by the day of the test your mi will turn to a 0. Please study!!

Unit One test: Make up will be in class if you were absent. Tuesdays after school or make arrangements for the morning if you want to retake the test.

Nov. 21-23

This week will will be working on using our knowledge of good experimental design to create our own experiments. If you miss this week you can use the online book Activity #9 Data Toss. Remember to get your missing work turned in and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Grades this week:

Lab book participation: Participation grade for clinical trial, data, analysis 1-4 for activity #9. There is no make up for this assignment. You were graded on your participation for the activities.

Data Toss Activity #9 Part 2: Data Toss planning sheet. This is in pocket #12. You design and carry out your own experiment. The procedure in on A-39 in the Science and Life Issues book. Use the online book. Remember the analysis questions for this activity!

Extra Credit: If you are allowed view a Myth Buster that you are interested in and identify the steps of the scientific method that were used in the episode. 20 points
